The rest of the developed world has installed safety screen doors on its subway systems. New York City sticks out like a sore thumb with its metro platforms leaving its city residents at risk every day. With Asian Americans at higher risk of being targeted throughout the city, officials should offer more protection. But they don't. They won't even officially acknowledge hate crimes. It's my belief that there's a greater chance of getting safety screen doors installed on the New York subway system than the Asian American community's trauma being addressed with laws, programs, funding and political power.

Therefore, in memory of the recent attacks on the Asian American community especially those on Christina Yuna Lee & Michelle Alyssa Go, we should at least advocate for safety screen doors on the New York subway system so that this critical piece of New York city infrastructure can no longer be a site for violence. Transportation should enhance the pleasure and economic productivity of the citizens of New York. Riders should feel empowered, safe and free while riding the subway. They should feel no anxiety while waiting on the platform either. None of these concerns should cross the minds of residents or visitors of the world's greatest city.
