Is it Safe to Drink the Tap Water in Seoul?

If the water from the tap comes out pure enough to drink, then why does almost every Korean household still avoid it? You'll see a booming industry of home water filtration devices in South Korea where most household budgets factor in the monthly rental of a water filter system along with the internet and mobile phone. Even Seoul's acclaimed 'Arisu' - tap water that's branded as good as bottled water - isn't even consumed by city workers.

In one report, only 8 percent of Seoulites trust the tap water enough to drink it. Even after the government has filtered the water, stubborn chemicals remain like pharmaceuticals used in X-rays and CT scans along with aspirin and caffeine. Nowadays people are attaching filters to everyday faucets and showerheads. The translucent handles with disposable white cotton filter pads are a constant reminder that not all is pure with the water supply.

If you've ever wondered what's in the water and what one of those filter devices look like after it's filtered the water for a few months, hit the play button and don't forget to smash that subscribe button!
